The 21st Century can become the century of Biology due to the immense advance in new technologies in the field of biological research and the vital transcendence all these advances have for the well being of our societies. Genetics and Evolution are two interconnected branches of science which advance hand in hand in this interdisciplinary Master in which students are trained in the diverse areas comprising the study of Genetics, Evolution, Evolutive Genetics and, in general, Evolutive Biology. The methods, concepts and perspectives of these disciplines have contributed to clarify the main themes of Biological Science and they represent the basis for the development of the advances in applied sciences in the biomedical, agrifood and livestock branches. The Master in Genetics and Evolution has a research orientation jointly offered by the Universities of Granada (link to http://www.ugr.es) and Almeria, with participation of teachers from various Centres of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) (link to http://www.eez.csic.es/; link to http://www.ipb.csic.es/). It is structured in two teaching modules during the first semester of the academic year. The first module is a general module in which various Subject - matters related to various branches of study of Genetics are studied. After completing this module, students may follow one of the three itineraries or specialities according to the specialization teaching module selected. Biohealth Speciality, Agrifood Speciality and Evolutive Speciality. The second semester is for the End of Master Dissertation in one of the various Lines of Research available. This Master also offers, during the second semester, an optional module of external internship in one of two r+D+i companies for the students.

Academic opportunities. Relation with other studies

Research in R+D+i Departments of companies and industries of the bio-health, agrifood and environment sector or in hospitals. Food industry: Quality control (characterization of races, varieties, species, detection of transgenic products).

Companies with services in bioinformatics and genetic techniques/studies. Agricultural and Fish-farming industry: Genetic improvement. Pharmaceutical industry: Pharmacogenetics / pharmacogenomics. Forensic science.


Professional opportunities

The following professions are appropriate for the training offered in the Master: Genetics and Quality control analyst qualified technicians of companies with services in studies and/or genetic techniques; qualified technicians of companies related to management and computer analysis (Bioinformatics).
