Structure of the Degree

The proposed Master’s Degree course is structured over a year and divided into 2 semesters, each with a teaching load of 30 ECTS.

Core Subject. Fundamentals of Horticulutre (FH): The objective of this module is to immerse the students in intensive horticulture. This module consists of 1 compulsory subject with a credit load of 6 ECTS, to be taught in both Spanish and English.

Specialization Module (SM): 16 subjects and a total of 96 ECTS are offered. Each subject has a credit load of 6 ECTS. Students must take at least 18 ECTS in this module. Moreover, if the student wants to have reference to a specialty in the degree title, he/ she must meet the conditions set out below:

  • Greenhouse Technology (GT): The student must take 18 elective ECTS from the following subjects: GT1, GT2, GT3, and GT4. This will provide the student with the basic knowledge and skills for his/ her training in the specialty of Greenhouse Technology. This will be taught in Spanish.
  • Protected Crops (PC): The student must take 18 elective ECTS from the following subjects: PC1, PC2, PC3, and PC4. This will provide the student with the basic knowledge and skills for his/ her training in the specialty of Protected Crops. This will be taught in Spanish.
  • Quality  and Post-harvest and (QP): The student must take 18 elective ECTS from the following subjects: PC1, PC2, PC3, and PC4. This will provide the student with the basic knowledge and skills for his/ her training in Quality  and Post-harvest . This will be taught in Spanish.
  • Intensive Horticulture (IH): The student must take 18 elective ECTS from the following subjects IH1, IH2, IH3, and IH4. This will provide the student with the basic knowledge and skills for his/ her training in Intensive Horticulture. This will be taught in English. Students will receive mention for having studied this course in English.

Internship (IM): The main objective of this module is to immerse the student in the business and professional sector. This module consists of 1 compulsory subject called Technology and Applied Management (TAM) with a credit load of 6 ECTS. It will consist of an internship in a company, and some optional field work or meetings with experts from the business sector. This will be taught in both Spanish and English.

Advances in Horticulture Module (AHM): The main objective of this optional module is to consolidate awareness of the different relevant aspects of the horticultural industry. This module consists of 12 subjects each with 6 ECTS, thus representing a total of 72 ECTS. The student may study all the material he/ she deems appropriate, provided that the annual credit load does not exceed 60 ECTS. Some of the subjects are taught in Spanish, and others will be taught in English, so that both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students receive material which meets their training needs. However, a student may study the subjects in either language, according to his/ her educational interests, as long as he/ she has the necessary language skills.

Master’s Thesis (MT): This has a load of 12 ECTS and is obligatory. The objective of the Final Master’s Thesis is to develop the integration of the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the Master’s Degree and translate this into a structured document that will be defended publicly, and which is aimed at assessing the skills associated with the degree title. The final thesis can be presented and defended in either Spanish or English.

Part of the teaching is offered exclusively in Spanish, another part is offered exclusively in English and other subjects are offered in both Spanish and English. The aim is that both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking students receive full training (60 ECTS) in both languages. The subjects offered in both English and Spanish are considered necessary for the development of all Master’s students, regardless of the language of instruction.

Specialities / Itineraries

The degrees have been configured so that the student can be awarded a particular specialization. Such specializations may receive different names, although the most common are "Specialty ", “Curriculum Plan” or “Mention"

The degree title "Master in Mediterranean Greenhouse Horticulture” includes the following specialties:

  • Especialidad "Tecnología de Invernaderos"
  • Especialidad "Cultivos Protegidos"
  • Especialidad "Poscosecha y Calidad"
  • Especialidad "Intensive Horticulture"

Prerequisites and Corequisites

The Study Plan may include special conditions that must be met in order to register for, or take some of the subjects. These conditions are the PREREQUISITES AND CO-REQUISITES: A subject or a group of subjects, called “key subjects" that must have been studied or successfully completed (prerequisites); or subjects or a set of subjects that must be studied simultaneously (co-requisites).
